I am an IPEN Placenta Remedies Specialist.
Why use your placenta for post birth healing?
During a normal vaginal delivery a new mother will lose at least one eighth to one tenth of her body’s blood supply, with caesarean section births blood loss can be significantly more. Losing a large amount of iron so quickly can cause anaemia, leaving a new mum feeling tired, faint and exhausted. The blood needs high supplies of iron to carry oxygen to the cells – low supplies of oxygen leave your cells starving and less able to heal after trauma. The placenta benefits the new mother by supplying incredibly rich iron, amino acids and essential fats which we believe is the perfect replenishment following birth.
The most important nutrients found in rich supply in the placenta include:
- Iron – essential for oxygen absorption in the cells
- Vitamin B6 – aids in the making of antibodies
- Vitamin E – for healing damaged skin cells
- Oxytocin hormone – essential for breastfeeding, the production and flow of milk
- Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) – responsible for reducing stress levels
- Cytokins – Fibroblasts that trigger cell metabolism healing and replacing damaged cells and tissue
There are a number of ways you can benefit from your placenta which I can help you with. I have seen them all work amazingly well with new mothers.
Most commonly women want their placenta encapsulated after birth. You can choose to either have a Traditional Chinese Method preparation or a Raw Dried Preparation. You can enjoy a smoothie too. This is so beneficial because of the stem cells it contains that get to work on helping you to recover quickly from the birth of your baby.
You may choose to have a tincture, which should last till your menopause, so when your periods return, or you have hormonal upheavals or a difficult menopause, your tincture will help you through these times.
You can also have a tiny part of the placenta turned into homoeopathic remedies, in the 7th and 30th C potencies for baby and mother. The remedy is said to be the constitutional remedy for the child.
Lotions and balms also carry healing properties that can be applied directly to the skin, and make a good nappy cream too.
If you are not sure that you want to encapsulate your placenta, I recommend that you freeze it. This then gives you the option to have the Traditional Chinese Method of encapsulation should you need your placenta.
