Why use your placenta for post birth healing?

During a normal vaginal birth a new mother will lose at least one eighth of her body’s blood supply, with caesarean section births blood loss can be significantly more.  Losing a large amount of iron so quickly can cause anaemia, leaving a new mum feeling tired, faint and exhausted. The blood needs high supplies of iron to carry oxygen to the cells – low supplies of oxygen leave your cells starving and less able to heal after trauma.  The placenta may benefit a new mother by supplying minerals, including bio available iron, amino acids, protein and essential fats which maybe the perfect replenishment following birth.

Some important nutrients found in rich supply in the placenta include:

  • Iron – essential for oxygen absorption in the cells
  • Other minerals include Phosphorus, Magnesium, Manganese, Calcium, Copper and Sodium
  • Vitamin B6 – aids in the making of antibodies
  • Vitamin E – for healing damaged skin cells
  • Oxytocin hormone – essential for breastfeeding, the production and flow of milk, along with 16 other hormones
  • Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) – responsible for reducing stress levels
  • Cytokins – Fibroblasts that trigger cell metabolism healing and replacing damaged cells and tissue

There are a number of ways you can benefit from your placenta which I can help you with.  I have seen them all work amazingly well with new mothers.

placenta capsules

Most commonly women want their placenta encapsulated after birth. The capsules are often referred to as “Placenta Pills.” You can choose to either have a steamed preparation or a simple dried preparation. With the steamed preparation, your placenta is steamed, then sliced and dehydrated, and with a simple preparation, your placenta is dehydrated . Once dehydrated, the placenta is then ground and filled into capsules, as you can see in the picture above.

You can enjoy a placenta smoothie too. This can be beneficial because of the fresh stem cells it contains that get to work on helping you to recover quickly from the birth of your baby. Many women say that their bleeding reduces and stops more quickly, with their milk coming in sooner after they have drunk their fresh placenta smoothie. They also say how much more energetic they feel.

You may choose to have a tincture, which should  last till your menopause, so when your periods return, or you have hormonal upheavals or a difficult menopause, your tincture will help you through these times.

You can also have a tiny part of the placenta made into homeopathic remedies,  in the 7th and 40th C potencies for baby and mother. The remedy is said to be the constitutional remedy for the child. This could be because of the uniqness of a homeopathic remedy made from the child’s placenta.

I make homeopathic remedies for mothers and their babies, so you can also choose the potencies you want, and re order your remedies when needed. Mums say that they find their homeopathic remedy helps them when they are feeling anxious, separated from life, sad and or depressed. With babies, they say they find it helps with colic, teething, separation anxieties, repeated coughs and colds and times when their baby is grumpy or generally out of sorts. The remedies may be useful throughout the rest of Mum and baby’s life as many of the symptoms Your Placenta homeopathic remedy may help with can occur at any time in life.

Placenta Essence. This is made with distilled water and vodka and is said to hold the intrinsic nature of the placenta. Mothers have said that they find it calming, helps to ground them when feeling anxious, and to rise above the worries that hold them back from enjoying their day.
